Homemade Slime

For our #trysomethingnewsundays my 6 year old daughter wanted to try making, “slime”.  It’s been popular for a couple years but my daughter, who is in Kindergarten, just learned about it and wanted to try it.  I did a lot of research and read about the pros and cons of using borax.  With 3 little ones at home, I needed an easy and safe recipe for them.  The recipe I chose from PBS Kids, did have borax.  I learned after many studies that borax is safe, as long as it’s not ingested in high dosage and not rubbed directly into eyes.  I monitored my kids the entire time, didn’t let them pour the borax, and washed their hands as soon as they were done playing with the slime and everyone was fine.

Here’s the site that list the pros and cons of borax.

Ingredients

  • 1-4ounce bottle of Elmer’s Glue.  (My daughter used the pink sparkle glue)
  • 4 ounces of warm water added to the glue bottle.
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tsp borax
  • Food coloring (optional)

Additional Items:

  • Large bowl
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cup
  • teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Pour 4 ounces of glue into the bowl.
  2. Add warm water to the glue bottle, pour into bowl.
  3. Add a few drops of food dye (optional)
  4. Mix 1/2 cup of warm water and borax, mix together and add to bowl.
  5. Stir all the ingredients together until a thick mixture forms.
  6. Remove from water.
  7. “Slime” will begin to thicken and dry.
  8. Store in plastic bag for up to 2 weeks, then throw it away.
